World Coffee Roasting Championship to make US debut

The World Coffee Roasting Championship (WCRC) will take place in the United States (US) for the first time at the Specialty Coffee Expo Houston from 25 to 27 April 2025.

The competition, part of the Houston World Coffee Championships (WCC), will gather more than 25 champions and top competitors to the at the George R. Brown Convention Center and is said to be the largest edition to date since its launch in 2013.

The World Coffee Championships (WCC) are a series of seven competitions that take place annually at major coffee events, showcasing talent in various aspects of coffee preparation and service. Organised by more than 50 global bodies, these events showcase coffee professionals’ expertise, with updated rules, formats, and equipment keeping them engaging for both participants and spectators.

Following the WCRC in Houston, the 2025 competition season continues with the Jakarta World Coffee Championships from 15 to 17 May at World of Coffee Jakarta, Indonesia, featuring the World Brewers Cup.

The Geneva World Coffee Championships will take place from 26 to 28 June at World of Coffee Geneva, Switzerland, where more than 80 competitors will compete in the World Latte Art, World Coffee in Good Spirits, World Cup Tasters, and Cezve/Ibrik Championships. The 2025 season concludes from 17 to 21 October at HostMilano in Milan, Italy, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the World Barista Championship.

As part of the WCRC, competitors showcase their skills through sample roasting, the open cupping process, and their ability to deliver their target roast profile by completing a modified SCA Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) Descriptive Assessment. Judges evaluate accuracy through competitors’ self-assessments and conduct double-blind sensory tests across multiple categories.
