Trichologist’s homemade hair mask for hair and scalp health!
If you are looking to harness the power of your kitchen cupboard to support hair health, our wellbeing expert Kate Holden has put together a DIY hair mask to try. If you don’t have all these ingredients, check the avoid list below for ingredients that aren’t recommended for your hair or scalp.
Ingredients:
– ½ avocado – 3 tbsp coconut oil
– 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
– 1 tsp finely ground coffee beans
– 2 drops rosemary oil
Directions: Blend ingredients together well. Apply the mask throughout the hair and scalp from root to tip, and gently massage in your scalp. Put under a shower cap for deeper conditioning and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse in warm water, shampoo twice and condition. Blow dry and style.
Benefits:
– Coconut oil – encourages a healthy scalp microbiome and protects the hair
– Avocado – full of healthy fats to make the hair soft
– Apple cider vinegar – clarifies the hair and scalp
– Coffee beans – natural exfoliant and contains caffeine and stimulates blood flow
– Rosemary – has antioxidant properties and may help hair growth
Ingredients to avoid:
– Olive oil – research has shown that olive oil damages the skin barrier and worsen scalp problems
– Coarse salt – large flakes of salt can scratch the scalp so be careful with any large exfoliants
– Baking soda – sodium bicarbonate has a high alkaline pH which can make the hair frizzy, rough and brittle
– Eggs – eggs are very nourishing for the hair but skip adding these to your hair mask unless you want to rinse out scrambled eggs from your hair
