OWNING A CAFE | What it’s like, renovating the bathroom, deep cleaning the kitchen, catering ☕️✨
Owning a café, especially in a small town like Harlem, Georgia, is a rewarding yet challenging experience. My café, Harlem Java House, has been a hub for our community, but it’s not without its hurdles, especially as a new business owner.
One of the major challenges we faced was the much-needed renovation of our café’s bathroom. Operating on a budget, we had to carefully plan every step of the renovation process. It required us to be resourceful and creative in finding affordable yet durable materials and labor. Despite the challenges, seeing the transformation of our bathroom was incredibly satisfying. It not only improved the aesthetics of our café but also enhanced the overall experience for our customers.
Another memorable experience was catering for 100 teachers early in the morning. It required meticulous planning and coordination to ensure that every teacher received their order promptly. We had to streamline our processes, from ordering supplies to preparing the food, to meet the demands of such a large order. While it was a hectic morning, the appreciation and positive feedback we received from the teachers made it all worthwhile.
One of the most physically demanding tasks we undertook was deep cleaning the shop for 8 hours. It was a thorough process that involved cleaning every nook and cranny of the café. Despite the exhaustion, it was a rewarding experience to see our café sparkling clean and welcoming for our customers.One of the most impactful changes we made was rearranging the shop to make our small kitchen bigger and improve the flow of the shop. It required careful planning and consideration of the layout, but the end result was a more efficient and open space that enhanced the overall experience for both customers and staff.
Overall, owning Harlem Java House has been a journey filled with challenges and rewards. From renovating our bathroom to catering for large orders and improving the layout of our shop, each experience has taught us valuable lessons and helped us grow as business owners. We are grateful for the support of our community and look forward to continuing to serve them with our passion for coffee and hospitality.
