Coffee Types & How to Buy Green Coffee to Sell It For a Profit
As a coffee roaster, sourcing green coffee is one of the most important aspects of what we do. To make sure we get the best coffee for our retail, wholesale, and drop shipping customers, we work with a selected group of farmers and exporter/importers that we have deep relationships with. Those relationships have been developing over time, and allow us to get the freshest and best coffee throughout the year.
Once we select a region we’re interested in offering on our seasonal menu, we reach out to the people we know have access to specialty versions of these coffees. They provide us with a variety of small green coffee samples to roast on our Ikawa roaster, and then we “cup” or sample the coffee using a repeatable and standardized method. This sample roasting and cupping method allows us to judge the coffee on its merits and not on how it was roasted or brewed.
On some occasions, we will get pre-ship samples, samples sent right from the farm or mill, to get a sense of the coffees on offer. If we like what we’re tasting, then when the coffee arrives in the US, we get another sample to compare. If we’re still thrilled at that point, we receive the green coffee, roast it up, and send it out to our customers.
