Breville Barista Express Impress - How to dial in espresso (episode 1)
👉 DIALING IN NEW BEANS (EPISODE 1)
Dialling in a new bag of beans is by far one of the biggest struggles for home baristas 😢
Letβs dial in together this washed Bolivia (thanks @redroostercoffeeroaster), make delicious espresso and learn together!
For every shot we will use a fixed dose of 18 grams, use the built in grinder of the Breville Barista Express Impress, WDT, straight tamp using the 53.3mm spring-loaded tamper from Normcore and apply 10 sec of pre-infusion.

18 grams in, 37 grams out, 30 sec extraction time
Grind setting 10 (external dial), 4 (inside burr)
No sweetness, woody, unpleasant, flat, astringent (under-extraction)
Next step – grind finer

18 grams in, 35 grams out, 35 sec extraction time
Grind setting 7 (external dial), 4 (inside burr)
More sweetness & flavour, improved mouthfeel, but thereβs room for better (under-extraction)
Next step – grind finer

18 grams in, 36 grams out, 40 sec extraction time
Grind setting 5 (external dial), 4 (inside burr)
Rich, flavourful, smoother, acidity slightly over-powering
Next step – increase brew ratio (i.e. extract more espresso)

Grind setting 5 (external dial), 4 (inside burr)
Tastes sweet, fruity and the acidity is more balanced
