The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has announced the results of the 2024 Sustainability Awards, crowning Sancoffee as the winner of the for-profit category and Root Capital in the non-profit category.
Winners will formally be recognised for their achievement at World of Coffee Copenhagen, in Denmark, from 27-29 June.
“The way I see it, and I believe this aligns with the views of our senior leadership and farm-owner members, is that sustainability means using coffee as a business and a tool to create impact,” says Sancoffee CEO Fabrício Andrade.
“This means adding value for people and creating long-term solutions that do not compromise resources in the present or the future.”
Recognised for their innovation, collaboration, and positive impact across the entire coffee value chain, according to the SCA both winning companies have not only dedicated themselves to confronting the challenges facing the specialty coffee industry but also to working across geographies, cultures, and value chain roles.
“Our mission, our purpose, is to grow prosperity and resilience of rural farming communities who live on and help steward precious landscapes and ecosystems in Africa, Latin America, and in particular, coffee lands,” says Root Capital Founder and CEO Willy Foote.
“We do that by partnering with, and investing in, agricultural businesses like farmer-owned coffee co-operatives that are deeply rooted in local community and are committed to sustainable land management and have potential to become an engine of impact in their communities.”
A committee of SCA staff and previous SCA Sustainability Award winners reviewed the finalists in each category, which were announced earlier this year.
