As part of a survey, Swedish coffee roaster Löfbergs has found that 8 out of 10 Swedes drink coffee, with filter coffee being the clear favourite.
Löfbergs’ coffee report is a comprehensive study of Swedish coffee habits, addressing questions such as how many Swedes drink coffee, what they prefer to drink, and when.
“The survey confirms that coffee is the national beverage in Sweden, where we consume more than 1000 cups of coffee per person on average each year,” says Anders Thorén, Head of Corporate Communications at Löfbergs.
Seventy-three per cent of Swedes say filter coffee is their most common choice. Meanwhile, instant coffee, which ranks second, only accounts for 7 per cent.
Looking at the type of coffee Swedes drink regularly, the figure for filter coffee is even higher – 87 per cent – far ahead of cappuccino and espresso at 21 per cent each.
Additionally, morning coffee was the most important cup of the day for participants, with 69 per cent in agreement. Fifty-five per cent have their first coffee before 8am, and 95 per cent before noon.
The survey also shows that Swedes find it difficult to be without their coffee. When asked how hard it would be to quit drinking coffee, 57 per cent said it would be difficult or very difficult. This is significantly higher than for beer (20 per cent) and soda (11 per cent).
“This highlight just how deeply ingrained Swedish coffee culture is; the social benefits coffee provides are incredibly strong,” says Thorén.
