We live in an increasingly divided world, by politics and culture and a million other lines in the sand we draw between us and them. But coffee, it’s one of the few things that unites us, that brings us together. And it has once again managed to call a truce and find a common grand between the two greatest rivals of a generation. I’m of course talking about blood feud between The Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC.
The two most popular boy bands of the ‘90s and early ‘00s have put aside their differences, with members of each band teaming up to make The Iced Boys, a supergroup created to extol the greatness of Dunkin Donuts’ iced coffee. (Disclaimer: greatness for promotional use only. Actual greatness may vary.)
As reported by The Drum, The Iced Boys consists of *NYSNC’s Joey Fatone and The Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean. The duo’s first track, titled “Iced Like My Coffee,” is part of The Iced EP, a five-track album about Dunkin’ coffee available only on Spotify. Coming in at a tight eight minutes, the remainder of the tracks have titles like “Refresher Season” and “SPARKD’ UP” and “All I Need is An Iced Coffee” and are performed by Peyton Mackenzie and August Roads.
But of course The Iced Boys are the stars of the show, and as such “Iced Like My Coffee” is the lead single, with a music video to boot. In it, Fatone and McLean are never too far from an iced coffee, singing lyrics like “You got me iced” and “Don’t dunk away my heart again,” which implies that his heart has previously been dunked away and that it was not a pleasant experience.
The new album is part of the Dunkin’Terns summer ad campaign created in collaboration with Artists Equity, the production company of World’s Most Famous Bostonians Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
It just goes to show the true uniting power of coffee. If members of rival factions can put their differences aside over the love of coffee (and probably a paycheck), perhaps there is hope yet for the rest of us.
