At Milan Design Week, Italian coffee company illycaffè has launched its new illy X-CAPS capsule coffee system.

The new system is designed to preserve the freshness and aroma of the coffee while also being a more sustainable solution. The capsules are made from 85 per cent recycled aluminium and have a symmetrical shape for bidirectional use, which is said to ensure a simple and intuitive user experience.

“With the launch of X-CAPS, we are proud to combine over 90 years of experience in high-quality coffee with a concrete commitment to innovation” says Cristina Scocchia, CEO of illycaffè.

“X-CAPS represents excellence in taste, thanks to our new Hyperinfusion technology, and marks an important evolution in the way we aim to offer consumers a unique and sustainable coffee experience—even at home.”

The Hyperinfusion technology was developed to ensure optimal coffee extraction. The technology enables the water to meet the coffee at the ideal pressure, which the team at illy say guarantees an aromatic extraction and a rich, full-bodied espresso with a long-lasting crema.

Architect and designer Luca Trazzi designed the two new illy X-CAPS machines: the X1, features a steel body, instant heating, and an energy-saving mode; the X3 is a minimalist and functional machine made from 50 per recycled or renewable plastic. The X3 is available in white or black and with two finishes: satin or glossy.
