Build-Outs Of Coffee: Aventura Coffee In Yakima, WA

Continuing this week’s theme on Build-Outs, we’re excited to bring you cool new cafes opening or under construction in lesser-known cities and towns across the country. Today’s build takes us to Yakima, Washington, an agricultural hub city and gateway to the Yakima Valley, a major region for fruit, vegetable, and wine production. Pacific Northwesterners who haven’t visited Yakima recently—or have perhaps never made the trip—will discover a town on the grow, with several very good restaurants, breweries, and yes, a small but proud specialty coffee scene. Here you’ll find Aventura Coffee, a roaster-retailer opening its second location later this year. Let’s take a closer look at what’s brewing in the Yak!

For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?

Aventura Coffee is a small batch speciality coffee roaster that started in Salinas, CA but has made its way to Yakima, WA. Roasting coffee that feels familiar but with elevated clarity and taste.

Aventura is the coffee for the espresso drinkers and the Mocha drinkers alike. Our brand represents the various palates in speciality coffee and aims to leave behind the “Mexican Mocha” to highlight a true cultural experience, not a marking theme.

Our coffee goal is simple, true approachability and accessibility.

Can you tell us a bit about the new space?

Our new space is our second location. Our first location is a 550-square-foot pocket within a bookstore. Our second location is a complete build out, which will allow us to create a space that will serve to highlight our mission of serving at the intersection of cultural palette and cultural representation within the speciality coffee scene.

What’s your approach to coffee?

We are a third wave coffee shop. We take pride in our coffee sourcing, our coffee roasting, and our coffee service. Our goal is provide speciality coffee grade experience in a way that feels familiar and approachable to the community we serve. We dedicate time and energy to every drink, from our espresso to our milk and sugar creations. Every drink is crafted to create an experience for anyone that walks through the doors.

Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?

We are super pumped to bring in the Bellwether Roaster. As a start up, the fees for a traditional roaster are so grand. The Bellwether allows us to scale up from the roaster we have now without sacrificing another part of our vision due to cost.

We are also very excited to bring in a Ground Control Brewer into the cafe.

How is your project considering sustainability?

We aim to work our way to a zero-waste cafe. The goal is not something we expect to hit overnight. Although, we are excited transition to eco-friendly service equipment (e.g., to go boxes, straws, etc.), we are very excited to bring in the Bellwether Roaster to aide in the sustainability through the roaster perspective.

Another large project we are working on with the new location is coffee fill up stations. Coffee bags are more often than not, single use. Our goal is to provide a reusable solution to our guest to aide in this area.

What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?

September 2024.

Are you working with craftspeople, architects, and/or creatives that you’d like to mention?

We believe it is important to work with local contractors to ensure the coffee shop fuels the community. The goal is to create local opportunities from the start by hiring contractors that are present int he community with us.

Thank you!

Thank you! We are excited to create a space in Yakima, WA. Yakima is not a city filled with endless options of speciality coffee. But this gives us the opportunity to create a space that invites people into this world. Although it is an uphill battle, we feel that the energy and passion we create will aide in closing the divide between the current coffee scene to the one we hold to uplift.

Aventura Coffee is located at 118 S 1st St, Yakima. Visit their official website and follow them on Instagram.
