Thousands of coffee professionals descended upon Milan, Italy, earlier this month for the 2023 incarnation of the HostMilano trade show and expo.
DCN was on hand to explore some of the show’s biggest releases, including eight shiny new espresso machines boasting progressive designs and technology.
Today we present some options as companions to those machines, highlighting new commercial grinders that publicly debuted either as sales-ready or production-ready models.
This is not intended to be an exhaustive list, and we are still gathering information about new launches (contact our editorial team here). Also, stay tuned for a forthcoming feature story on new roasting and home coffee equipment.
In the meantime, here are some new grinders from HostMilano 2023, representing a range of aesthetic styles and functional purposes:
Mahlkönig EK Omnia
Mahlkönig unveiled the next-generation model of its iconic EK43 grinder called the Mahlkönig EK Omnia. Maintaining the classic EK shape, the Omnia introduces a range of new technical features, including a reimagined adjustment dial that shows the distance between burrs in real time, and a “library mode” for recipe storage. We’ll have more on the EK Omnia soon.
Mazzer Kony Sg
Italian coffee grinder specialist Mazzer unveiled its first entry in the commercial grind-by-weight (GBW) category, a variation within the popular Kony line called the Kony Sg. According to the company, the load cell in the Kony Sg’s built-in scale allows for repeatability and accuracy of GBW doses down to the hundredth of a gram. DCN will have more on this soon.
Eureka Atom W75 and W65
Among a bevy of new home and commercial grinders rolled out at HostMilano by Italian manufacturer Eureka came two new commercial grind-by-weight machines. The Eureka Atom W65 and W75 build off of Eureka’s existing Atom platform within the Eureka Oro commercial grinder line. Both models, which boast different burr sizes, are expected to reach the European and U.S. markets in early 2024.
Eureka Zeus
Eureka also showed off the production-ready prototype of its forthcoming Zeus One grinder. Initially displayed in 2019, the Zeus reflects a clear aesthetic design departure from other Eureka Oro models while promising 85-millimeter flat burrs, low retention and an adjustable RPM motor. The Zeus is expected to launch sometime next year.
Eureka Atom Cool 80 and 65
Yet more additions came to the Atom range in Eureka’s Oro line through the Atom Cool 80 and Cool 65, which boast 80- and 65-millimeter flat burrs, respectively. Key elements of the Cool models include variable-speed motor operation through the expanded touch screen and a burr distance detection system that clearly displays grind settings for quick adjustments. Designed for relatively quiet operation in high-volume espresso preparation environments, both Atom Cool models are expected to launch later this year.
Slingshot Talis
Commercial coffee equipment maker Slingshot — which maintains offices in Hong Kong, Australia and Europe — unveiled the Slingshot Talis, a towering on-demand grinder for specialty coffee shops with numerous interesting features. Not least among them is a “zero gravity hopper” — available only with the 75-millimeter titanium burr version — that chambers coffee to keep consistent pressure on beans being delivered to the grinder while preventing small beans from bypassing. Each of the three new Talis models includes a stepless “micrometric” grind adjustment system and a joystick control for on-the-fly time-based dosing settings. We’ll have more on this soon.
Mahlkönig E80W Grind-By-Sync
In addition to its much-anticipated release of the EK Omnia (see above), Mahlkönig rolled out a variation of its grind-by-weight E80W model called the E80W Grind-By-Sync. Introduced jointly by Mahlkönig and La Marzocco as part of The Sync System, the grinder can automatically make grind size adjustments based on wireless data sent from compatible espresso machines.
La Marzocco Swan
While much of the attention at the La Marzocco booths was focused on new espresso machinery, such as the above-mentioned Sync System launch or the new line of Strada machines, working prototypes of the La Marzocco Swan commercial grinder were quietly supplying the grinds. La Marzocco introduced the Swan concept in 2019. The grinder has not yet been publicly released.
