The Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) and the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, signifying a huge leap in the enhancement of the differentiation, traceability, and global appreciation of Colombian specialty coffees, according to the two organisations.

The new formal agreement builds on collaboration between the two industry bodies on previous projects and is set to create new opportunities for producers across Colombia.

Implementing the SCA’s Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) methodology within the FNC’s processes is the initial focus of the partnership, which will see the FNC train technical teams and cuppers in its application and integrate data collection at origin.

The SCA will share CVA data on coffee attributes and market preferences to support the FNC’s research efforts, which is hoped to inform Colombian producers about emerging market trends and preferences.

CEO of the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation Germán Bahamón says the collaboration is set to have a profound impact on Colombia’s coffee grower community.

“Colombian coffee growers are at the heart of the world’s specialty coffee community,” Bahamón says.

“By adopting innovative tools like the Coffee Value Assessment, we open the door for greater recognition, alignment with our market preferences, and reward for diversity and excellence of our coffees. This partnership with the SCA and FNC strengthens our commitment to promoting prosperity for our farmers and delivering exceptional coffee to the world.”

Yannis Apostolopoulos, CEO of the SCA, also reflected on the “milestone” partnership.

“Together, we aim to highlight the extraordinary diversity of Colombian coffees, improve market connections, and ensure a more equitable value distribution across the coffee value chain,” he says.

“Partnering with the FNC represents a major milestone for the Coffee Value Assessment and our shared mission to make coffee better for all.”
