Green coffee trading company JNP Coffee has partnered with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to increase production and export of higher-quality specialty coffee from Burundi.
The partnership – which includes JNP Coffee’s affiliated company JNP Coffee Burundi – will also establish a coffee academy to equip women and youth with the skills required for a robust coffee economy in the East African nation.
The initiative is expected to create 600 jobs and projected to increase coffee exports to the United States by US$400,000 in 2026.
Over 23 months, the partnership will establish a coffee micro-lot dry mill and the Coffee Academy of Burundi, aiming to boost employment opportunities for women and youth in the coffee industry and stimulate trade and investment in Burundi.
Showcasing the strength of Burundi’s private sector, JNP Coffee and USAID’s funding partnership will be used for personnel, land, and equipment purchases, construction of the dry mill, and kick-starting the Coffee Academy training.
The Coffee Academy of Burundi, located within the company’s expanded cupping lab in Bujumbura, will serve as a year-round educational hub and training facility for youth aspiring to work in various coffee industry roles.
Training will be provided by consultant experts using training material sourced from the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), where 100 women and youth will receive training to become qualified baristas, cuppers, coffee processors, roasters, and marketers. JNP Coffee seeks partners to join this venture to deliver transformational results for these student cohorts.
“While both sides have a steep learning curve on how to co-create these projects together, we are grateful to have the strength and support of USAID behind these projects. Our success will also mean greater progress for the people of Burundi, which serves the core mission of JNP Coffee,” says Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian, JNP Coffee Founder and CEO.
In November 2022, the US Department of Agriculture and TechnoServe launched the five-year Burundi Better Coffee Initiative to support 60,000 coffee-farming households with improved processes and training. JNP Coffee plans to collaborate with similar projects to enhance the industry.
With more than a decade of experience, JNP Coffee has increased yields and incomes for Burundi’s coffee farmers. Notably, in 2019, seven women coffee farmers used earnings and premiums from JNP Coffee to build a $100,000 wet mill, which significantly boosted their production and allowed them to control their processing.
