My first job after university was in a small café in the city center. I got a job as a barista, and at first the job seemed perfect: good atmosphere, friendly customers and quite tolerable conditions. However, it soon became clear that the bosses had their own special requirements.

My manager decided that all employees should wear new uniforms, and we had them made at our expense, of course. The uniforms were awful: a tight shirt and pants that looked like they were sewn on a person of a completely different size. To all the other employees, the uniform somehow fit, but I found it to be uncomfortable and ridiculous. However, that wasn’t the biggest problem.

A few days after we started wearing the uniform, the manager suddenly told me that it “looked unaesthetic” on me and that I was “ruining the overall impression of the place.” When I tried to argue that the uniform was the same for everyone, he replied, “You’re fired because it doesn’t suit you.”

Without thinking long, I packed my things and left, feeling liberated from the ridiculous demands. The next day I got a call begging me to come back because there was no one to serve the morning shift. I came back, but only after they doubled my salary. A month later, I left on my own – for good.
