A group of German industrial designers launched a new coffee equipment brand called NECCST while readying the flagship product, a manual grinder with grind-by-weight capability.
An acronym for New ECkstein Coffee SysTem, NECCST emerged from the Munich-based firm Eckstein Design.
The forthcoming NECCST Coffee Grinder features a large steel flywheel for vertical cranking action, geared for speed with a 1:1 ratio. The hefty 13-pound flywheel is supported by a wide base for wobble-free, one-handed tabletop operation, according to the company. Overall, the grinder checks in at 30.9 pounds.
Markings on the patented exterior adjustment system indicate the height difference between the flat, level undersides of the cone and ring of the grinder’s titanium nitride-coated 47-millimeter custom conical burr set.
The adjustment collar’s numbers represent this measurement in millimeters, bucking the trend of indicating burr gap or particle size in microns.
“The markings on the adjustment collar are a bit tricky,” NECCST COO Fynn Eckstein told Daily Coffee News. “Conical burrs have a complex geometry, so pinpointing the exact gap isn’t straightforward. We conducted an extensive and meticulous search for a burr supplier that was open to creating and manufacturing a burr matching our exacting expectations.”
An anti-static system taming the outward flow of grounds consists of a burr-attached sweep and a magnetically removable, food-safe PMMA plastic funnel.
“We conducted extensive material tests with a variety of metals, special coatings and various plastics,” said Eckstein. “This, combined with a propeller-like wiper and the ease of removing the funnel via magnets, ensures super low retention.”
Grind-by-weight functionality comes through a digital scale integrated into the base of the grinder. Its 3.4-inch capacitive touchscreen displays the quantity of ground coffee as it accumulates, with 0.1-gram resolution, according to the company. The hopper can hold up to 250 grams of whole bean coffee, and the scale is also detachable for further use in brewing.
NECCST was founded by the father-son duo of Stefan and Fynn Eckstein, who lead a seven-designer team at Eckstein Design. The firm has worked work for clients such as Brainlab and 3M, with products in numerous industries, including healthcare and craft tools.
“As coffee enthusiasts, we’ve combined our expertise in creating high-end products with our passion for home espresso and coffee to embark on our first venture in the coffee industry,” Fynn Eckstein said.
Pre-orders for the NECCST Coffee Grinder will come through a Kickstarter campaign scheduled for November, with a special price of $500. The price is expected to rise to $995 for company-direct pre-orders beginning next year, with grinders expected to begin shipping in Spring 2025.
“We see great possibilities in distribution, tamping and other accessories within the coffee universe,” said Eckstein. “Our goal is to provide a comprehensive range of high-quality tools that enhance the coffee brewing experience.”
