The Build-Outs series on Sprudge knows no boundaries. Big cities, global capitals, up-and-coming trendy burgs: we visit them all. We even throw in the occasional small hamlet, a geographic demographic (or geo-demo) that’s enjoyed considerable growth in the specialty coffee scene over the last decade. Such is the case with today’s fresh build, which takes us to little Wendell, North Carolina (population 5,845), home to a brand new and rather welcoming specialty coffee bar called Parallax Coffee Lab. We’ll meet you there!

For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?
Parallax Coffee Lab is a vibrant new coffee shop that’s newly opened in downtown Wendell, North Carolina after 1.5 years of renovating a historic downtown building. Launched by three families from the area, Parallax promises a fun, no-rules, all-frills experience with expertly roasted coffee from Black and White Coffee Roasters. From espresso, to pour-overs, to a wide tea selection from Durham’s Jasper and Gold, customers can enjoy their brew in an eclectic, lo-fi atmosphere, while exploring plants for sale throughout the shop through their partnership with Root Bound in Zebulon. The baked goods from Union Special Bread are not to be missed, so early birds should arrive early for the best daily picks! Open Monday-Saturday from 7 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm, Parallax invites all coffee enthusiasts to geek out with them while exploring the art of coffee. Not all scientists wear lab coats, especially at Parallax!
What’s your approach to coffee?
Coffee is meant for all levels of taste. We are located in a very small town outside of Raleigh with big chain options being the only close proximity coffee in the area. To enjoy specialty coffee, you have to drive 20-30 minutes in any direction. Our approach to coffee is passionate geekiness. We LOVE educating our customers, and our town has loved learning more about coffee and how to taste the natural flavors of the bean.
Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?
We are rocking a custom Slayer Steam LP2 in a burnt pink color with matte black legs, a white Mahlkönig EK43, plan to eventually have a Poursteady for pour-overs (currently doing kettle service) and Nitro Kegerator (rocking B&Ws Sebastian Ramirez – Peach on nitro starting this weekend!)
How is your project considering sustainability?
We use high quality, ethically sourced products, and are in the midst of choosing a supplier for eco-friendly straws and cups in our next inventory order.
What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?
We opened April 20, 2024
Are you working with craftspeople, architects, and/or creatives that you’d like to mention?
Our entire team are creatives, and we collaborate with so many artisans. Our large partnerships are listed in the bio above.
Thank you!
