As it turns 25 years old this year, pioneering Portland, Oregon-based Stumptown Coffee Roasters has renewed its commitment to its home city with the opening of a downtown Portland cafe.
Located in the new mixed-use 11W Building at SW 11th Avenue and SW Washington, the new Portland cafe follows the permanent closing of Stumptown’s long-running cafe inside the Ace Hotel in downtown Portland, which was just around the corner.
In an opening announcement, Stumptown described the new cafe as part of “a shared investment with other businesses and companies in the rejuvenation of downtown Portland.”
The interior of the new shop, which melds elements of Japanese and Scandanavian design, was led by Portland-based firm Studio Butch. Green Rabbet Builders led the build.
A bento box-inspired lighting installation warms the cafe entrance, which leads to a striking two-toned green and gold-colored La Marzocco Linea PB espresso machine customized by the Espresso Parts Custom Shop.
A sculpture created through a collaboration with Oregon-based design and fabrication firm SKG FAB was designed to symbolize the city of Portland’s connected neighborhoods.
Borrowing the Japanese art concept of kintsugi — in which broken pottery is mended with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum — the piece located at the far end of the bar was conceived as “a nod to Portland’s perseverance over the past decade, supported by the surrounding community of businesses and artisans that remain steadfast in their commitment and dedication to this incredible city,” according to the company.
The new coffee shop is Stumptown Coffee’s 10th overall, joining four other existing locations in Portland, three in New York, one in Southern California and one in Kyoto, Japan. Stumptown coffees are also served aboard Alaska Airlines.
The new downtown Portland Stumptown Coffee Shop is located at 1140 SW Washington Street in Portland, Oregon. Tell DCN’s editors about your new coffee shop or roastery here.
