A new report from Circana reveals a significant surge in global coffee consumption.

The research, undertaken by the advisor on the complexity of consumer behaviour, showed total coffee servings had a 5 per cent year-over-year growth across the world. A total of 12 countries were studied as part of the report, including the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil. Eleven of the 12 countries observed this trend, with China experiencing the highest growth rate in coffee consumption and South Korea the only country not to report year-on-year coffee servings growth.

“Coffee is a unique category where trends and competition intertwine on both global and local scales,” says Tim Fires, President of Global Foodservice at Circana.

Other findings from the research show, while hot coffee remains the dominant choice, cold coffee continues to gain momentum in the 12 countries studied. Between 2019 and 2023, China had a 20 per cent compound annual growth rate with cold coffee making up a third of total coffee consumption.

“Cold coffee emerges as a standout trend, experiencing substantial growth across all 12 countries we monitor. However, the competitive landscape, encompassing both chain and independent establishments, exhibits unique characteristics in each country. Understanding both the overarching global trends and the intricacy of the local marketplace is critical for success in this category,” says Fires.

The report goes on to detail that coffee outpaced both tea (+4 per cent) and carbonated soft drinks (+3 per cent) in year-on-year servings growth.

The global coffee consumption research results were based on international data with local depth, which Circana says provided nuanced insights for each country and covered restaurant chains as well as independent segments.
