According to a survey by Brainy Insights, the value of the specialty coffee sector is expected to reach US$152.69 billion by 2030, representing a growth rate of 12.32 per cent over the forecast period.

“Knowing the increase in consumption of specialty coffee and the new opportunities this trend brings to producers, we created a project for small and medium-sized coffee growers who don’t yet work with specialty grains. In the Essências initiative, we advise participants on post-harvest processes, helping them with all the phases and protocols that demonstrate quality, in a personalised way, respecting the individualities of each crop,” says Sandra Moraes, Specialty Coffee Manager at the Cerrado Coffee Growers’ Cooperative (Expocacer).

According to the research, the North American specialty coffee market, for example, is expected to grow by 20 per cent per year until 2030. This would make it the fastest growing market in the world.

“We recently opened a logistics hub in the United States, which is our biggest coffee buyer, and the vast majority of the beans we are sending there are specialty. At first, our plan is to deliver one container per week, each with around 320 bags of 60-kilograms of coffee. This project aims to boost the economy and the consumption of specialty coffees, which is growing more and more,” says Simão Pedro de Lima, Expocacer’s Executive President.

The hub is expected to increase sales in the North American market by 10 to 15 per cent in the first year alone. Global consumption of Brazilian specialty coffee has grown consistently at an annual rate of 12 per cent in recent years, according to the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation.

“Consumers want to know the producer, where the coffee comes from, if it’s made sustainably, and Expocacer’s members do that very well. The hub is also coming to help us in this process of coffee traceability,” says Pedro de Lima.
